Full system time travel debugging on Android system

  • Who: Guillaume Vilcocq, eShard
  • Schedule: 14:00 - 17:50
  • Language: English
  • Room: 102
  • Description: This workshop introduces Time Travel Debugging (TTD) in a full-system virtual machine environment, with a focus on Android system analysis. TTD provides an alternative approach to debugging and reverse engineering, allowing analysts to inspect execution at every level, from kernel to user space, by recording and replaying complete system activity. We will begin with a brief overview of the TTD concept and demonstrate how one can capture and reproduce an entire operating system’s execution history. The session will then transition into a hands-on challenge centered on Android native code, designed to highlight TTD’s advantages over traditional debugging methods. Participants will experiment with key TTD capabilities, including forward and backward execution, memory history tracking, and other advanced features that reveal the depth of this analysis technique. By the end of the workshop, attendees will have solved the challenge and reviewed a new technique, gaining a clear understanding of how TTD can be practically applied to enhance reverse engineering and system-level debugging.
